Optometrists in the US are trained and licensed to diagnose and manage some common eye diseases. They cannot treat any retina conditions as retina diseases are treated with injections and laser treatment. They can prescribe all topical medications (prescription eye drops) and most some medications (tablets/capsules by mouth), as well as administer diagnostic agents. In some states, optometrists may also be licensed to perform certain types of eye surgery.
